Concorde wins 20th Century design survey

Concorde has been voted the number one design icon of the 20th Century by viewers of BBC2's The Culture Show and visitors to London's Design Museum. The aircraft came in first place, in front of the London Underground map and the Spitfire, in the programs survey, the results of which were revealed on 16th March. The result underlines the importance of the Bristol-built supersonic airliner in the eyes of the British population. Although the aircraft was designed and built jointly with Sud (later Aerospatiale) of France, its appearance is still very similar to the BAC Type 223, a preliminary design from Filton in 1961.
